In 1992, Džemila Džananović (b. 1959) fled Bratunac to the safe zone of Srebrenica with her husband Rasim, sons Asim and Nasib, daughter Nasiha, and father-in-law Nezir. Although detained in the camp, her sons survived the fall of Srebrenica. Her father-in-law Nezir (b. 1921) and her husband Rasim (b. 1953) were both killed.
“My husband’s and father-in-law’s watches are the only mementos I have left of them. I have been carefully holding onto them for years.
When the Memorial Center launched an action to collect the items, I decided to donate them.”
The watches have a symbolic meaning for Džemila – time has stood still for her since 1995.
Džemila’s testimony was documented within the multimedia project, “Memento: Fragments of the Srebrenica Genocide,” which is produced by the Srebrenica Memorial Center and the Post-Conflict Research Center.
